An economic analogy to thermodynamics

چکیده

We develop analogies between economic systems and thermodynamics, and show how economic quantities can characterize the state of an economic system in equilibrium. We argue that just as a physical system in thermodynamic equilibrium requires a nonmechanical variable ~the temperature T) to specify its state, so does an economic system. In addition, both systems must have a corresponding conjugate quantity, the entropy S . We also develop economic analogies to the free energy, Maxwell relations, and the Gibbs–Duhem relationship. Assuming that economic utility can be measured, we develop an operational definition of an economic temperature scale. We also develop an analogy to statistical mechanics, which leads to Gaussian fluctuations. © 1999 American

Is neoclassical microeconomics formally valid? An approach based on an analogy with equilibrium thermodynamics

The relation between Thermodynamics and Economics is a paramount issue in Ecological Economics. Two different levels can be distinguished when discussing it: formal and substantive. At the formal level, a mathematical framework is used to describe both thermodynamic and economic systems. At the substantive level, thermodynamic laws are applied to economic processes. In Ecological Economics, the...

Thermo-economic Analysis of Power Cycles

Exergy analysis is based on combined first and second laws of thermodynamics and is a useful tool to analyze the energy systems in a better and more realistic way than an energy analysis, based on the first law of thermodynamics. Combination of exergy from thermodynamics with conventional concepts from engineering economy which is referred to as thermo-economy (exergo-economy) is a valuable too...

Statistical mechanics of money

In a closed economic system, money is conserved. Thus, by analogy with energy, the equilibrium probability distribution of money must follow the exponential Boltzmann-Gibbs law characterized by an effective temperature equal to the average amount of money per economic agent. We demonstrate how the Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution emerges in computer simulations of economic models. Then we consider ...

Physical analogy between continuum thermodynamics and classical mechanics.

The main focus of this paper is the profound physical analogy between a continuum thermodynamical system, which evolves with relaxation under (possibly) nonisothermal conditions, and a classical mechanical system of a few interacting particles moving with dissipation in (possibly), time-dependent nonconservative fields. This analogy is applied to the problem of phase transitions in a one-dimens...
